In 2021, as a special concern of Tag Gornall, GreenTech initiated an educational campaign about the importance of plankton and impact of pollution on the waters surrounding Vashon and the whole planet. There were articles in the Beachcomber, a comprehensive display at Strawberry Festival, a gallery show at PSCCU, depicting enlarged photographs of microscopic plankton taken by islander Karlista Rickerson, and another gallery show at Vashon Center for the Arts, featuring models of microscopic plankton also enlarged into sculptures and photographs on fabric panels by Port Townshend artist Rebecca Welti . The scope of this project is ongoing and partially funded by the Wiman Foundation of Seattle.

  1. GreenTech is exploring the potential of establishing a site for Green Burial on Vashon, which is designed to have a minimal environmental impact and conserve natural resources. Also called natural burial or eco-friendly burial, green burial emphasizes simplicity and sustainability. … The body is placed in a biodegradable container and interred in a gravesite to decompose fully and return to nature.

  2. In 2021, GreenTech also began to research ways to deal with Vashon’s wasteful, expensive and polluted methods for dealing with septic on the island. This is also part of an interest to further Vashon’s waste to power concerns, which would help us maintain ourselves if our electrical source from Puget Sound Energy off-island were to be affected for a significant period of time.

  3. In 2021, GreenTech became the fiscal sponsor of the community organization called The Whole Vashon Project. The WVP mission is to “unite the Vashon community to confront the climate crisis by developing ways to work collectively and achieve transformative goals for an ever-greener, healthier island home.” IGT board member Rondi Lightmark is the creator of Whole Vashon Project and Tag Gornall is an advisor.
